How a Lithograph is made.

Using a grease pencil I draw directly onto a smoothly grained slab of limestone. I draw on the stone surface exactly as I would draw on a piece of paper. When my detailed drawing is completed I treat the stone with a chemical desensitizing solution. I then dampen the stone with water and a sponge and roll a stiff black ink onto the stone surface. The ink adheres only to the areas where there is grease (my drawing). A piece of dampened watercolor paper is layed over the surface of the stone and the image is transferred to this paper by rolling it through the press under heavy pressure.

I re-ink the stone for each print… each is made by hand. I then hand paint the black and white image and each one of the series of 30 is painted differently. After I have completed 30 prints, the surface of the stone is ground down with a levigator to erase the image and make the stone smooth again for a new drawing.
