How an Etching is Made.

I first cover a polished Metal (zinc) plate with a coating of wax and resin and let it dry. I then draw a picture through that applied covering with a sharp tool, thereby exposing the metal where I’ve drawn. After my drawing is complete I submerge the zinc plate in nitric acid and the exposed areas are bitten into by the acid. When this process is complete, the protective covering is removed and I work ink into the drawing where the acid has etched into the plate. I transfer that image to dampened print paper under the heavy pressure of my etching press (two thousand pounds per square inch of pressure).

Each print is made individually by hand and the plate is re-inked for each print. I then hand paint the black and white image and paint each of a series differently.
